Dear Madam/Sir,

State Significant Project - Angus Place Mine Extension (SSD 12_5602)

I strongly object to this mine extension for the reasons stated below:

Important terrestrial and stream environments in this significant part of the Gardens of Stone region must not be damaged by longwall mining but instead protected in a state conservation area.

The Angus Place and the adjoining Springvale mine extension proposals must be subject to a Planning Assessment Commission review with concurrent Public Hearings.

Centennial Coal must not be allowed to simply replicate the damage it has already caused to nationally threatened upland swamps on the Newnes Plateau for which it was required by the Commonwealth Government to pay $1.45 million in reparations.

The sandstone strata supporting the 22 nationally endangered swamps, including the 7 shrub swamps must not be fractured.
The proposed clearing of 14 hectares of forest for an additional ventilation facility is excessive and its proposed location close to the Wolgan River is unacceptable.

The proposed discharge of up to 43.8ML/day of eco-toxic mine effluent must be treated using reverse osmosis technology to remove all metals and salts before discharge to the Coxs River.
Carne Creek is currently in a pristine state, and its waters that flow through the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area are of the highest standard. This creek must not run bright orange or suffer reduced flows, just like the Wolgan River after Centennial Coal wrecked it.

Please require Centennial to revise this proposal to improve environmental outcomes. Carne Creek, pagodas, cliffs and the many nationally endangered swamps that the current proposal puts at risk must not be damaged.

Yours sincerely,

Fee Mozeley

Now is not the time to be starting any new coal projects, let alone in pristine areas, with high ecological value.

Even if you don't care about the environment at all, even if you are not worried about the terrible threat of climate change, the need to move beyond fossil fuels, into renewable energy there are obvious economic issues with this project.

The price of coal is dropping globally. Before long, it won't even be economical to mine coal and the taxpayer will be left with a big mess left behind by a bankrupted company. Coal is a polluting industry, injurious to human health, destructive of clean water and a major contributor to climate change.

Community protests will continue to delay this project and add to the costs. Once the global coal price drops below $60 per tonne, the industry is over in Australia and that is going to happen by the end of the decade on current trends.

Governments should be protecting the public against the depredations of corporations, not aiding and abetting them in their destructive and greedy activities. Where is the public good in allowing this project to go ahead? I see no evidence of it.

Have some foresight and some responsibility and put a stop to this dangerous, dirty and destructive industry once and for all. It's not wanted and it's not needed.

I support Angus place because i am involved with a lot of local sport and there contributions, help the Lithgow sporting clubs

Also with there charity work, they play a big role in the community with helping out and funding vairious local organizations.

Angus place is an underground mine which doesn't effect the environment and properties that it is under. If it where a open pit mine, the land would be destroyed beyond repair

I am aware of Angus Place's EIS and wish to comment in favour of the application. Centennial Angus Place has been heavily invovled in the local community for a considerable number of years, during which time, many local and out of area people have managed to gain employment at the mine. In turn, the people whose livelyhood revolves around the mines continuing operation, have been generous (along with company support) on many charities. The company has been aware and compliant of its obligations towards enviromental issues and has had a good history in this regard. The mine is a key supplier of coal to another local industry, namely the 2 power stations nearby, and has a direct impact on the people working there and in other associated industries, which feed off Angus Places operation. I feel very strongly about this submission, and hope the department grants the operation its application.

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I understand the proposed Angus Place extension covers an area of 2,638 hectares of the Newnes Plateau and will cause the land surfaces to subside up to 1.9 metres. I understand this will likely severely impact on 22 nationally endangered swamps, including 7 shrub swamps. This proposal and the adjoining Springvale Mine Extension proposal, should be subject to a Planning Assessment Commission review with concurrent public hearings.

Yours sincerely

Angus Place supports a large number of people in the district with the employment of around 300 people and with many charities within the district like World Vision, Camp Quality, Legacy and Daffodil Day. They also have a good track record of mining in the local area with minimal impacts to the people that live it here.

Angus Place plays a big part in supplying coal for electricity generation. They have supplied equipment for the public and private hospitals in the area and they make donations to many charities like early intervention, big morning tea and support the local cancer walk.

I oppose this submission due to the damage it will do to the Gardens of Stone area.
This area should be protected. It would be sad to see the swamps etc damaged for coal exports.

I read that "Centennial... admits its mining will fracture iconic Birds Rock, a Flora Reserve, and the sandstone beds under 73 nationally endangered swamps."

I have seen enough mismanaged areas after mining operations where the area is not properly rehabilitated. It seems large companies find it cheaper to pay the monetary penalties than look after our nature areas.

Angus Place has supported the Lithgow community for a very long time. My family has a long history with Lithgow, with many generations on both sides of my family spending their entire life in the Lithgow region. Angus Place has played a large part in both my fathers life/employment and also my grandfather as well. With large donations to many local charities, Angus Place should be highly regarded and respected in the region.

Dear Madam/ Sir

This submission relates to both Angus Place and Springvale mine extensions.

Even the current surface works are involving extensive clearing.

About 1.5m subsidence and cracking will destroy the water table.

The heavy metal pollutants into the Grose River from the closed Canyon Colliery still make the water poisonous after many years and this proposal pumps heavy metals into Sydney's water supply- Lithgow already has significant health problems.

Wolgan River was polluted above Wolgan Falls by a surruptitious discharge by this company which accepted the fine and if it expands will probably pollute the pristine Carne Creek catchment.

Enormous long term costs and environmental degradation of public land are proposed for 13 years of Centennial Coal profit. This land is within two hours of Sydney and is of great diversity and beauty. The fracturing of pagodas and dead trees along the ridges at the back of Baal Bone long wall mining is an example of what is to come.

This is not a suitable location for broad scale long wall mining.

Centennial Coal has already damaged areas of national significance in the past. Their longwall mining activities on the Newnes Plateau caused a loss of ecosystem function shown by loss of peat, erosion, vegetation dieback and weed invasion in three swamps. They also caused the formation of a large slump hole, several metres wide and more than one metre deep, at the East Wolgan swamp.

Centennial Coal has caused the pollution of water supplies in the Wolgan and now you want to give them open slather on Carne Creek, a pristine water source that flows through our World Heritage Listed Blue Mountains National Park?

I really never will understand the relentless pursuit of the short term $ over long term sustainability. You have the opportunity and the responsibility to protect these areas for future generations: please do it.
