The Steelworks at Port Kembla is a significant employer in the Illawarra, many thousands of jobs are reliant on the success of BSL, and the local economy is also dependant on the income of those whom work there. The No.6 Blast Furnace reline project is critical to the future of the Steelmaking operation, and must go ahead to ensure the future of the business. As a local my entire life I am concerned about retaining the beauty and health of our local area. The steelworks has a care and concern for the environment, from personal experience I can attest that its impact on the air and water quality is negligible if at all. The company cares about the neighbourhood it is surrounded by and obviously makes significant investments in equipment to eliminate pollution to the environment.
As a sovereign nation we need to have a viable and high quality steel producer to be self sustaining, as has become more evident since the recent Covid impact on the worlds markets. BSL, as the largest producer of Steel and Steel Products in Australia is critical to manufacturing in Australia.
It is encouraging that an Australian owned company with Australian origins is willing to invest $1 Billion to ensure the future of Steelmaking in Australia.
I support the approval of this Project.

This Project will not only create Jobs in the local economy but will also expand opportunities for our services within Bluescope. Alsco currently provide PPE Uniform services for many departments within Bluescope and have done so for over 20 years to ensure all staff meet compliance within their working area along with a fully managed garment service.
This project also presents as a positive growth opportunity within our organisation to increase our staffing levels which helps reduce the unemployment in the Illawarra region. It also offers security for my organisation to continue to reinvest into the Bluescope business to support the safety of their employees.

It ensures a successful future for BlueScope Steel in the Illawarra and this is vital to Australia for many reasons.
It provides many local jobs and is vital to the Australian economy.
It is a benchmark for safety in Steelmaking across the globe.
It reduces Australia's reliance on imported steel at a time of global instability in manufacturing.
BlueScope has a serious commitment to the environment and continually making improvements to the steel making process, something that can not be said about many of the other major steel making countries.

I support the project because it is good for the local area by providing employment and supporting economic growth. It is also in Australia's best interests to maintain and support manufacturing by not letting it go overseas.

The BlueScope Steel No.6 Blast Furnace Reline Project will enable the continuation production of world class quantity steel in Australia. This investment being made by BlueScope Steel will continue the Port Kembla Steelworks operations with environmental improvements and supply steel to the various expanding domestic including vital use in infrastructure, building and construction, defence and renewables projects as well as export customers.
The Project will continue to support both those directly employed by BlueScope Steel and those indirectly employed by the contractors and suppliers that are also engaged by them. This support is not only in the construction stage but also in the continuation of the Steelmaking facilities.
K&R Fabrications is a contractor who will benefit from this project and the continuation of the Steelmaking operations. K&R Fabrications began business in 1968 and is locally owned and predominately operates in the Illawarra Region and has been providing goods and services to BlueScope Steel since our inception.
K&R Fabrications is recognised locally as a progressive professionally managed supplier, fabricator and installer of structural steelwork, and a major provider of maintenance services.
K&R Fabrications can assist BlueScope Steel during the No.6 Blast Furnace Reline Project construction stage with our skilled and initiative-taking workforce, which can then be engaged as needed post implementation of the Project.
This continuation of Steelmaking Operations will mean K&R Fabrications, like BlueScope Steel, will be able to also invest in the future, which includes the continuation of our successful apprentice/training programs and various other future opportunities.
BlueScope Steel and K&R Fabrications both are extremely active in the community supporting various organisations, which will only remain with the continuation of the Steelmaking operations at the Port Kembla Steelworks, which will exist with the No.6 Blast Furnace Reline Project.

The Port Kembla Steelworks is iconic in the Illawarra and so important to steel supply for Australia.
The future of a lot of jobs in the Port Kembla Steelworks relies on this project going ahead. This project will directly save and create a lot of employment in the Illawarra, including those of my husband and me.
BlueScope is constantly investing in environmental upgrades, and steel is needed to support other environmental infrastructure such as windmills.

I wholly support the project to reline number 6 blast furnace. The project is critical to having an Australian steel industry to protect our sovereign capabilities and to maintain a manufacturing industry in Australia. As the largest manufacturing facility in the country, this reline is the best way to protect our ongoing industry.
I understand the implication of new technologies such as "green steel", but the technology is just not there to implement as yet. Relining 6BF gives BlueScope time and funding to implement such technologies for future generations and to maintain such a critical industry.

This project will provide ongoing stability for the Illawarra region, not only the steelworks, but for the broader community through the requirement for external firms to provide services for its successful completion. At a higher level, this project supports the overall manufacturing industry in both NSW and Australia, reducing the reliance on materials being imported from abroad. The significant capital expenditure on carbon abatement aspects of the project will provide a not insignificant impact on the local, NSW, Australian and world environments

The Number 6 Blast Furnace reline project supports 10,000 direct and indirect jobs in Wollongong using local contractors and suppliers.
There will be upwards of 250 new jobs created during construction and the project is a $1 billion total project investment for BlueScope. The project will be completed in 3 years (by 2026) and BlueScope will spend over $100m in environmental improvement upgrades to prepare the business for green steelmaking in the future. This is an exciting and critical project for the Illawarra region.
