Dear Madam/Sir

Regarding the State Significant Project - Angus Place Mine Extension (SSD 12_5602) i would like you to consider following points:

Important terrestrial and stream environments in this significant part of the Gardens of Stone region must not be damaged by longwall mining but instead protected in a state conservation area.
The Angus Place and the adjoining Springvale mine extension proposals must be subject to a Planning Assessment Commission review with concurrent Public Hearings.
Centennial Coal must not be allowed to simply replicate the damage it has already caused to nationally threatened upland swamps on the Newnes Plateau for which it was required by the Commonwealth Government to pay $1.45 million in reparations.
The sandstone strata supporting the 22 nationally endangered swamps, including the 7 shrub swamps must not be fractured.
The proposed clearing of 14 hectares of forest for an additional ventilation facility is excessive and its proposed location close to the Wolgan River is unacceptable.
The proposed discharge of up to 43.8ML/day of eco-toxic mine effluent must be treated using reverse osmosis technology to remove all metals and salts before discharge to the Coxs River.
Carne Creek is currently in a pristine state, and its waters that flow through the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area are of the highest standard. This creek must not run bright orange or suffer reduced flows, just like the Wolgan River after Centennial Coal wrecked it.
Please require Centennial to revise this proposal to improve environmental outcomes. Carne Creek, pagodas, cliffs and the many nationally endangered swamps that the current proposal puts at risk must not be damaged.
Yours sincerely,
Jutta Poelz

The area affected by undermining is one of particular natural beauty and unique geological formations. It should be protected at all costs for our future generations to experience and enjoy. Enough of our natural heritage has been lost in the name of short term gains. This is an opportunity to try to reverse the damage done by previous history even at the expense of changing present lifestyles. I have observed the damage already done and would like to see it corrected by the relevant responsible parties and any further progression of destructive practices ceased.

My Submission is for the project.

My concerns are for the community and the young children that maybe forced to move to start their working life if Lithgow becomes a Ghost Town.
I also expect to retire here in Lithgow and not be forced to leave the home that I built with my own hands using local tradesmen.

Angus Place Colliery plays a big part in the Lithgow community and the local district.

Lithgow area has been involved in Mining for as long as I can remember. The first steel works in Australia was set up here because of the abundance of coal.

My family's history involves five generations of mining with one of grandfathers closing his shop in Scotland and bringing his young family to Lithgow by ship to find their fortune in the 1920s.

Angus Place Centennial is a very reliable supplier of coal to the states power supply.
Their attitude towards the environment and the local surroundings shows with their high standards work and constant auditing to ensure minimal effect on the natural landscape and fauna. This makes it a good place to work.

The use of the most up to date mining methods and machinery ensures high productivity with low impact on the environment . This is evident when you tour through the district and see the poor efforts shown by other companies.

The community profits from Angus Place's involvement. some of the organizations that profit are;
schools
hospitals
elderly accommodation
early intervention Kids

I am proud to say I have been employed at Angus Place since 1980. It's good to think that I can be part of a leading coal suppler in NSW. In that time I have been fortunate to have traveled the eastern states of Australia, also to the Hammersley ranges in Western Australia and as far as China with my work. With the knowledge I have gained and the mining standards I have seen, it only reinforces my thinking that Angus Place is doing it right.

I am relying on this new project going ahead. the local community is relying on it as well.
Angus Place is not a fly by night operator and I am confident that this project will have minimal effect on the landscape it involves.

I have been employed by AP colliery for 46 years in an underground supervisory position. My family have lived and worked in the local area in mining and associated occupations for 2 generations prior to me. The industry and AP in particular has served me well.
In regard to the development under discussion, the principal plus in respect to its environmental impact is that, it -the development- intends to utilise mainly existing infrastructure. This infrastructure has been in use for approximately 36 years without negative consequences.
The coal haulage is effected using private roadways and there are no immediate neighbours to disturb. All water and waste is collected, treated and disposed of in the appropriate manner as per legislation.
Any extra infrastructure is minimal and unobtrusive.
The developments positives as relative to the local and regional community, far outweigh any perceived negatives.
I personally am committed to conservation and ecological sustainability. I believe that the safeguards imposed upon the development are adequate and effective to allow a win/win for the community and the environment.
The benefits far outweigh any environmental impact and until alternative energy sources are up and running coal mining is our only option.
Coal mined from this development is as environmentally sensitive as coal mining can possibly be.
It has my wholehearted support

angus place colliery has been an integral part of the lithgow community since 1978 both financially and as an important supplier of coal to wallerawang and mt piper power stations. As an employer of 300 people in a district with a relatively small population it is imperative that the future of the mine be ensured. The extension to the mine workings is unlikely to impact on invironmentaly sensitive areas.

Dear Sir/Madam,

re: State Significant Project - Angus Place Mine Extension (SSD 12_5602)

I am a former Blue Mountains resident and teacher, and it was with great pride that I wrote and had implemented comprehensive mulit-disciplinary teaching units in schools across the Blue Mountains that stressed the importance of preserving this beautiful area. These units were written to coincide with the Blue Mountains Songlines festival. The units, and the programme that resulted were applauded by UNESCO for their forward thinking and teaching about special world-heritage areas, so it is with considerable alarm that I learned about the proposed mining extension in this area.

The proposed Angus Place and Springvale longwall mining extensions will impact mainly on Carne Creek, but also the Wolgan River, Marangaroo and Bunglebouri Creek headwaters.
The proposed Angus Place extension covers 2,638 hectares of the Plateau and will cause the land surface to subside up to 1.9 metres.
The proposed Springvale extension covers 1,860 hectares of the Plateau and will cause the land surface to subside up to 1.65 metres. As a result of these movements, the surface sandstone rock will be cracked to a depth of 15 to 20 metres over the entire area mined. Popular Birds Rock, in the Flora Reserve, will be fractured. This cracking will cause surface groundwater aquifers to drop by up to 10 metres.

In total, all 73 nationally endangered swamps will be damaged by cracking of the underlying sandstone rock due to the proposed mining. The lower groundwater levels in turn will cause these nationally endangered swamps to dry out. The peat soils that support these swamps will then decompose and over a period of years eucalypts and banksias will migrate into the dying swamps as they evolve into dry land communities. This damage would also kill the many threatened plants and animals supported by these swamps, including the giant dragonfly. In fact, these swamps are so often destroyed by longwall coal mining that scientists have described such mining as a 'key threatening process'.

The combined effluent discharge from both mines will be 43.8ML/day in 2023. This eco-toxic effluent will discharge 30.8 tonnes/day (or 11,247 tonnes/year) of metal-rich salts to the Coxs River that supplies Sydney with drinking water.

I respectfully ask that you require Centennial to revise this proposal to improve environmental outcomes. Carne Creek, pagodas, cliffs and the many nationally endangered swamps that the current proposal puts at risk must not be damaged.

This is ridiculous. This part of our country needs to be maintained, not destroyed. These stream environments should be protected for our future. This would be a dire mistake.

Cliffline cracking and collapse associated with long wall mining can be seen in many places in the Blue Mountains, from yhe Burragorang Valley to Hassans Walls. Indeed areas close to the Angus Place Colliery's existing works show prominent examples of cracking and collapse. The Gardens Of Stone particularly are an iconic area into which Angus Place must not be allowed to extend such damage.
Further, the now defunct and, needless to say unaccountable Grose Valley Colliery demonstrates both the dangers of stream capture and contamination with which the Angus Place proposal threatens the Wolgan River catchment.

Angus Place is a major employee in the Lithgow area and I do all my shopping in Lithgow, many businesses will close if there is a negative impact on the mining workforce. I have been a volunteer and employee of PCYC Lithgow of which Centennial is a major sponsor and these donations are vital in keeping open the doors of this not for profit organisation. We are an important community lifeline for the troubled youth in Lithgow and promoting a healthy lifestyle for all the community with our sporting programs.

I object to the Angus Place Mine Extension Project because of the significant impacts the mining is likely to have on water quality, nationally endangered upland swamps and other important vegetation, surface cracking due to subsidence, adjacent World Heritage national parks, the important Gardens of Stone landscape and especially within the catchment of Carne Creek, which has so far not suffered the impacts of underground mining. The proposed use of longwall extraction methods is particularly objectionable as it has already been shown to damage surface drainage, swamps and pagoda rock formations. At least the project should be modified to use bord and pillar methods. There should be a Planning and Assessment Commission enquiry to examine the environmental issues.
