It is clear that the proposed outdoor gaming area would inflict significant noise, light and smoke pollution to the local residents. This request is particularly egregious given the significant information that is now freely available on the negative impact that this casino has on society at large as well the immediate impact on our local area, and of course most directly on the local residents some of whom moved to the area before the development of the Star Casino.
We object to the approval of the proposed modification on the following grounds:
- The proposed outdoor operations will impact on the local public space and specifically houses at 16, 14 & 18 Pyrmont Street which are only 40 meters from the proposed gambling space.
- The rooftop gaming and outdoor smoking area will have permanently open louvers and be available to patrons 24/7. The potential for unabated noise, light and smoke pollution around the clock 7 days a week interferes with the safe and peaceful enjoyment of one’s home.
- Noise control of the gambling machines is now in the hands of the patrons not the management, which has been an option previously.
- The proposed green wall will have negligible impact on the noise and smoke pollution, an alternative barrier such as a Plexiglass barrier wall will likely improve the ability to mitigate the noise and light.
- The management of the Star has been unresponsive to all reasonable requests to modify their behaviour, so it is critical that all building modifications take the worst case scenario into consideration. We, the community, are asking for serious consideration with respect to managing the constant expansion of this facility at the expense of the community health and amenity.
In Conclusion
UVV would appreciate favourable and meaningful consideration of our feedback above and look forward to engaging in community consultations regarding any modifications that allow this commercial gambling facility to impact on the communities of Ultimo and Pyrmont.
