I object to Modification 4. The Bundara Reserve has a protected remnant
forest which needs to be respected and protected. Please see the
details of my submission in the document attached.

Submission

I am writing a submission to oppose Modification 4 SSD 5093 and oppose
the proposal for a 24 hour worksite.

As a local resident and councillor, I would firstly like to point out
how unfair it was on the local community to mount the exhibition for
this proposal over Easter. Giving the community little to no time to
lodge submissions opposing this modification, then refusing the
council's request for an extension. This community work hard as bush
care volunteers for the greater good and the
benefit of all Sydney siders, they deserve to have their opposition
heard.

Like many in our community, I believe if the proposal on exhibition is
approved it will put North Ryde's Sydney Turpentine Ironbark forest,
at Bundara Reserve, at risk. It is an important remnant forest and
there is less than 0.5% of this type of forest currently left in the
Sydney bioregion. These species must be conserved for future
generations and the sake of biodiversity.

The forest is also an important wildlife corridor and addition to the
much needed canopy in the area. It should be noted that the
destruction of established canopy like this is inconsistent with the
Greater Sydney commission Northern district plan, which advocates for
the retention of such trees for shade and air quality (particularly on
a busy intersection, on a major transport corridor like the M2 and
Epping Rd).

The reasons given for tree removal from the Reserve and from the RMS
E2 lands are: a) Trees mean excess bird droppings b) Branches from
these trees might damage the bridge c) Bushfire could damage the
bridge.

These issues are easily dealt with without removing trees. For a
start, the area is not bushfire prone (officially noted in a recent
council report) the tree branches can be lopped regularly to prevent
them falling on the structure and bird droppings can be removed.
Birds, I would think, will be MORE INCLINED to sit ON the bridge
without trees present, most likely adding to the required cleaning.

The bridge re-design appears much wider at the Bundara corner than
necessary, increasing its negative impact on the natural setting.
Perhaps another look at the design, reducing the bridge width at that
point, might reduce the impact on the protected forest.

I also feel that the 24 hour worksite proposal is unfair on the local
community. The land owners who live close to Delhi rd, have been woken
by jackhammers throughout the construction of the M2 and then
weathered the noise, dust and influx of workers vehicles in their
local streets since the massive Delhi rd developments began many
months ago. In reality their lives have been affected for a number of
years by noisy building. It seems only fair that the developer adopt
more neighbor friendly work hours at the site.

I moved to Ryde because it was a leafy, clean suburb and I understand,
given its proximity to the city/access to public transport routes, why
areas here were earmarked for high-density development but our
community has done their fair share already. Our traffic is
gridlocked, our schools are full and our sports grounds are booked
out.

Don't take our trees too... we need them even more now with so many
hard hot surfaces - to absorb the heat. We need them, now with so many
extra cars - to absorb the sound and with so many new residents to
filter our air.

Please don't allow the destruction of these tall important trees from
North Ryde.

Kind regards

Councillor Penny Pedersen

City of Ryde.

We have lived in Chatswood West for the past 35 years and we have seen
many trees removed including for the building of the M2 itself. We
feel these last remnants of bushland with their mature trees need to
be preserved. They not only provide important habitat for native
animals, they are invaluable for the well-being of the residents. The
detailed points of our submission can be found in the attached file.

The arguement that removal of the trees will reduce maintenance is a
fundamentally flawed one. Trees & the retention of them in an
increasing area of urbanisation is essential to life

Re: Modification 4 to SSD 5093 - M2 site, North Ryde Station Urban
Activation Precinct

Dear Minister Roberts,

I wish to submit my objection to the above Modification to SSD 5093
and ask that it be refused outright.

I am a long-term resident of Ryde having lived in the City for 50
years and having worked in Julius Avenue adjacent to these
developments for over 15 years.

The area around the intersection of Delhi Road, Epping Road and M2 has
seen extraordinary increase in density of development over the past 5
years and it is vital that the very limited amount of remnant native
vegetation that remains be protected.

Modification 4 affects the Sydney Turpentine-Ironbark Forest in and
around Bundara Reserve which is protected under Commonwealth and State
threatened species legislation. Turpentine Ironbark Margin Forest, is
listed as endangered under the Threatened Species Conservation Act
1995.
The modification proposes a significant loss of trees, much greater in
number than that originally proposed and given approval. Supporting
environmental assessments to the original application proposed none or
minimal disturbance to Bundara Reserve. Now it is proposed to remove
22 trees from Bundara Reserve and adjoining lands all of which are
zoned for environmental protection in Ryde's LEP 2014. As stated in
the supporting documentation these trees are considered to be of high
significance and would typically be required to be retained and
protected.

I am particularly concerned about the conservation of native birds in
our urban environment and the need to retain the few remaining remnant
areas of habitat in our urban area. These remnants are required not
only as habitat for resident animals but as corridors to enable
movement across the landscape in this case from Lane Cove River NP
through very limited native remnants to the Parramatta River valley
and further south.

A financial offsetting contribution by Landcom to directly benefit
Sydney Turpentine-Ironbark Forest in the local area would not
adequately offset the removal of existing mature turpentine-Ironbark
trees in a natural habitat.

I request that Landcom (previously Urban Growth who did the design for
the pedestrian bridge) be directed to go back to the "drawing board"
on both the bridge's alignment and design and comply with the
environmental constraints identified in the original environmental
assessment.

It is also very disappointing that this important modification was
only on exhibition for two weeks and over the Easter period. This
severely limits the ability for community to contribute their views
regarding the modification.

Yours sincerely
Catherine Goswell
