As a resident of Eurobodalla object to this third modification to the Dargues Reef Gold Mine Development Application.
The main danger with this project for those living in the Moruya River Catchment is the assumption that there will never be failures in the design or running of the proposed processing plant. Accidents do and will happen.
We are appalled that, as with the original development application for the mine, there is no reference to or assessment of the risks posed to the drinking water supply for the almost 40 000 residents of Eurobodalla Shire who rely on water drawn from the Deua River system.
the attached pdf document outlines our view that the proposed modification creates a pollution risk that is unacceptable to residents along the entire Moruya River catchment. The potential cost to our community is too great and Unity is ignoring the threat to our well-being.

I have just submitted by my objection - but I had an error in my attachment so here is the correct attachment. As residents of Eurobodalla we object to this third modification to the Dargues Reef Gold Mine Development Application.

At the Ordinary Council Meeting of 25 August 2015, Eurobodalla Shire Council unanimously resolved to object to the proposed modification 3 amendments to the Project Approval, as the proposed modification presents an unacceptable risk to the Eurobodalla drinking water supply.

Eurobodalla and Palerang Shire Councils engaged Dr Peter Beck of consulting firm GHD to carry out an independent review of the Proponents Environmental Assessment and to provide advice regarding the risks associated with the proposed changes.

Dr Beck's report is attached to and forms a part of council's submission.

A number of submissions were presented to Council during the Public Forum section of the Council meeting, including one from the Proponent. Copies of the public forum submissions are also attached.

Submission on EA for the Dargues Reef Gold Mine Modification 3 MP_10 0054 July 2015

To Whom it may concern.

Thank you for the opportunity to express my grave concerns regarding the approval being sought for further modifications to this mining and processing operation.

I strongly object to the addition of a cyanide treatment works to be located in the headwaters of the Deua River catchment. The catchment that is the primary water supply for all towns and villages within the Eurobodalla Shire Council area. In peak holiday season there can be as many as 150,000 people depending on the purity of that water supply for there needs. Whilst cyanide can be broken down, scientists tell as that it cannot be fully broken down and overtime is still residual in the environment. This is totally unacceptable situation for the potable water supply of the Shire and also the expanding clean agricultural industries relying on Deua River clean water.

I am very concerned that according to data provided in the report commissioned by council the data used by the mines proponent may not reflect the levels of rainfall that need to be designed for at the mine site. This is especially the case for determining the size required for the tailings dam which I believe is undersized for the intensity of rainfall events that can and have occurred at the Majors Creek site. In work done be Dr O'Loughlin I believe in that site a tailings dam of the size proposed would breach and introduce heavy metal contaminants into the Deua River. Again, a situation that cannot be allowed to occur, not now or anytime into the future.

These are legacies that we as a society cannot leave our future generations.

In closing please for the sake of future communities in the south east NSW reject approval of this application for modification 3.

I am a landholder and resident of the Deua river valley, downstream from Majors creek and the Dargues reef mine. I have lived here for 27 years and raised my family here.I drink the water from the Deua river, Iswim in it,I water my animals, crops, and gardens with it.The Deua is a clean beautiful healthy river. It supplies water for a large part of the Eurobodalla shire. I strongly object to Unity Minings proposed changes to the Dargues reef mine outlined in modification 3. Unity Mining made a commitment to this community that there would be no onsite processing of ore,no use of cyanide and no tailings dam. I,and many others were led to believe that the original lease was only granted because of this commitment. Amongst many other things Modification3 seeks to use cyanide and other heavy metals to process ore on site. It proposes to build an enlarged tailings storage facility,to increase the amount of ore to be mined to.6million tonnes and to extend the length of its lease to 2022.Whilst I object to Modification3on all levels my main concern and my strongest objection is the use of cyanide and the tailings storage dam, which would be situated in the water catchment for the Eurobodalla shire-a community well known for its support of healthy lifestyle. The SAGE community gardens, the public school kitchen garden project, the Moruya farmers market(winner of Australia's best farmers market award for two years running) agriculture, recreation and tourism all
