I object to the latest Ulan Coal Mine (UCML) expansion - Modification 4 -
to extend underground operations.

Some Key points for submission of objection:

The underground mine expansion will further threaten regional
groundwater sources to the north of The Drip gorge

More base flows to the Goulburn River will be intercepted

The cumulative regional impact of mining on the health and integrity
of the Goulburn River has not been assessed

Good quality water discharge from Ulan Mine into the Goulburn River
must be regulated under a set of environmental flow rules that mimic
natural flows

Do not support mining under the Durridgere State Conservation Area

The additional extraction of coal will increase the impacts of climate
change

I understand that people in coal need to make a living, which I can
sympathize with, but if we continue down this path we will make our
planet totally uninhabitable. We should use the money they wish to
expand the mine with and train these workers in renewable energies!

This proposed mine expansion must not be approved. It will add to the
already serious negative effects to regional groundwater sources that
impact the iconic Great Dripping Wall, the Goulburn River and
ultimately the Hunter River.
There must be provision made for good quality water discharge from the
Ulan mine into the Goulburn River.
Mining under the Durridgere State Conservation Area must not be
approved.
The world wide effects of climate change must be considered when
assessing this expansion and the effects of burning the additional
coal produced taken into account.

Dear Madam/Sir
I object to the Ulan Coal Modification 4.
My objection is on the basis of:
Excessive damage to groundwater flows that support the Goulburn river
Unacceptable damage to The Drip gorge, a place of great environmental
and heritage significance.
Continued contribution to atmospheric carbon dioxide.

Yours sincerely

I have been visiting and staying at "Gleniston", some two kilometres
downstream from the Ulan coal mine for 37 years. In that time I have
seen the Goulburn river change from a rushing healthy river to a
trickle, and last year to a dry river bed.

This latest proposal seems designed to ensure the total extinction of
the river, and the death of the flora and fauna that rely on it.

For coal. Foreign profits and total contempt for the suffering that is
being, and will be, caused by the indisputable fact of climate change,
largely brought about by fossil fuel usage.

How can you sacrifice your children's and grandchildren's future for a
few dollars in your pocket now?

I object to ulan coal mod 4 because
We have lived on the Goulburn river north of Wollar for 26 yrs. During
this time we have experienced some very dry periods that were much
longer than we are currently experiencing although have never seen
zero flow for such an extended period of time.
More base flows to the Goulburn River will be intercepted with this
modification This will impact on river flows during dry times and
affect downstream water users.
Good quality water discharged from Ulan Mine into the Goulburn River
must be regulated under a set of environmental flow rules that mimic
natural flows. The water must be returned to the river when the river
needs it.
The cumulative regional impact of mining on the health and integrity
of the Goulburn River has not been assessed

groundwater sources to the north of The Drip gorge

I wish to submit an objection to the expansion of the Ulan Coal mine.
We have already seen that UCML mining operations negatively impact
river flow and groundwater. When UCML stopped discharging treated
groundwater (late December 2017) the Goulburn River stopped flowing
until discharge recommenced recently. This shows the level of
interference of mine operations on the natural flow of the river
system. Extracted groundwater must be returned to the river under
environmental regulations that mimic natural flows and the impact on
the health of the Goulburn River must be properly assessed.

I am writing this objection as a concerned medical student and resident
in NSW. I fear that the continued expansion of the underground mine
will threaten groundwater sources to the north of The Drip.
Additionally, more base flows to the already vulnerable Goulburn River
will be intercepted, which stopped flowing in the summer in spite of
storms and nearby creeks continuing to flow. I am extremely concerned
that the full scope of impact on mining and the health of the Goulburn
River has not been properly assessed. The decision to continue
expansion therefore seems rash and dangerous to the health of the
environment and citizens. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, the
additional reliance on coal will only increase the well documented
effects of climate change today, something that undoubtedly affects
the country's health and it's citizens. This is something other
countries have begun taking very seriously, and I hope that as a
leading country, we would as well.

I object to the Application for further expansion of the Ulan Coal Mine.

I wish to submit that the Ulan Coal Mine, and new additional mines
Moolarben and Wilpinjong, are already having a major and deleterious
effect on the health of the Goulburn River and surrounding regional
groundwater sources.

These impacts have not been appropriately assessed. This should be
done before any further application is considered.

The mines have already interfered with the natural base flows of the
river which is now dependent on the return of treated groundwater from
the mine.

Environmentally appropriate levels of good quality water discharge
from the mine must be regulated to ensure the ongoing health of the
river system and the continuation of the iconic natural feature The
Drip.

Any expansion of underground mining will continue to threaten regional
groundwater sources and undermine local waterways. It is therefore
also inappropriate to consider allowing mining under the State
Conservation Area at Durridgere.

Thank you.

I strongly object to Modification 4 at Ulan Coal mine.

I am a long-term resident who has lived by the Goulbourn River and
used its water for garden, life-stock and domestic use for over 30
years. I live 50km downriver from Ulan, 6km downriver from where the
Wollar Creek enters the Goulbourn River. The Goulbourn River where I
live has always been reliable for water, even in very dry times. Now
that Ulan Coal Mine has stopped discharging water into the river, I
realise that this mine, together with Moolarben and Wilpinjong mines,
have intercepted surface flows over a large area of the river
catchment. This has impacted on central base flows that has sustained
the Goulbourn River in the past. Along with the drawdown of ground
water, this has caused the river to become highly dependent on the
discharge of treated mine water. Whilst I strongly disagree with the
discharge of mine water in principle, this discharge must be continued
to allow the health of this river.

Good quality water must be discharged from Ulan Coal for environmental
flow rules that mimic natural flows. Water must be returned to the
river when the river needs it. The cumulative impacts of mining on the
health and integrity of the Goulbourn River has not been assessed. All
three mines continue to expand without an independent regional water
study. It needs to be addressed before it is too late. The groundwater
expansion will further threaten regional ground water sources to the
north of the Drip. This iconic landscape must be protected at all
cost. This river must be treated with respect now before it is too
late.

Kind regards,
Bruce Hughes

I wish to object to the expansion of the Ulan Coal Mine (UCML) -
Modification 4, to extend underground operations. I request that the
Independent Assessment Commission be called on to review the water
issues and all the Approval Conditions.

There is a need for an independent regional water study.
A thorough assessment needs to be undertaken of:
1. Whether base flows to the Goulburn River will be effected
2. The impact on this underground mine expansion on The Drip gorge
3. The adequacy of the Conditions of Consent to ensure water discharge
from Ulan Mine into the Goulburn River is of high quality and mimics
natural flows
4. The impact on groundwater throughout the whole region
5. What the cumulative impact of mining in the region is on the health
and integrity of the Goulburn River
6. The cumulative impact of additional extraction of coal will be on
climate change

A independent regional study is required for the Goulburn River..as three
mines continue with their expansions.with poor outcomes for Goulburn
river.
Last summer the river ceased to flow, even after large storm events and
smaller creeks continued to flow. The effect on the drip cannot be
allowed to continue.Base flows will further be affected with ulan mod
4.
Being a resident of midwestern regional council area I continue to be
concerned with the effect of mining on the Goulburn River

I object to Ulan Coal Mod 4

because
more base flows to the Goulburn River will be intercepted.

I lived on the Goulburn River now for over 30 years and have
experienced it in wet and dry seasons. Since the Ulan Coal Mine
expandet and Wilpinjong and Moolarben Coal Mines opened up, the flow
of the river has drastically changed.
The river is a lifeline for everybody who is living along it,
including wildlife and vegetation. It seems to me that that factor is
not considered by allowing Mod 4 to go ahead. The impact and
consequence of more coal mining extensions and therefor the drawdown
of groundwater and interception of surface flow of the river has not
been assessed.
An independent regional water study is highly necessary bevor any
approval for Mod 4.
Already the river is greatly dependent on the discharge of treated
mine water. It must be regulated under a set of environmental flow
rules that mimic natural flows that will sustain the river.
We have the obligation to show respect and care for future generations
, who have the right to enjoy this river as we do in years to come. No
money can buy us new rivers once the old ones are dead and dry.
Consider carefully what impact Mod 4 will have on people and the
environment and of course climate change, not a myth anymore.
