Usage has been steadily increasing over the last 5 years.
However I am not happy that the plan represents a significant lost opportunity to increase uptake of active travel by creating, and improving on, key connections in the area.
In particular, connections need to be addressed from:
1. Sydney Park to Wolli Creek - not far, but no good connection
2. Sydenham to Mascot, not far, but no good connection
These could easily be added into the project at this stage but will be very difficult to retrofit later.
Great world cities are in part defined by how easily pedestrians and cyclists can navigate without being blocked by, or channelled along, major motor ways.
Let's seize this chance to make Sydney a better, world-class city.

North / South - from Sydney Park to Wolli Creek (including a direct bicycle crossing of Cook's River), and also to connect to Marsh St and the Botany Bay cycleroute (upgrade of the Brunetti Bridge).
East / West - from Sydenham (upcoming Metro station) to Wentworth Ave / Botany.
To the Mascot centre precinct.
To Sydney Airport Terminals and between terminals (T1 to T2).
Sydney Airport is a major destination and employer in this area, and current planning of this road project ignores local movement and place, and prioritises motorway speeds and access at the expense of local amenity and connectivity for major cycling routes.
We urge the Government to take this possibly last opportunity to provide direct and safe bicycle infrastructure across this area.

If the cycleway can still be in place along with the new motorway, my objection to the motorway would not be so strong.
The proposed alternative cycling route, through St Peters, is not viable for many people, as it is hilly (and also indirect)

2. This a disadvantage and outright danger for people who currently cycle or walk to the airport
3. The current Sydney Gateway proposal should not be approved without providing safe active transport links or even worse, make it close to impossible to have those links in the near future
Thank you

Alternative cycleway and pedestrian pathway: The current off-road cycle way inadequately links travel heading south and west towards Wolli Creek and Botany Bay. This must be rectified. The bike path from Tempe Reserve and Mascot connects with the international terminal and the Novotel side of Marsh St (with dangerous crossings, narrow shared pedestrian pathways, in front of private residential driveway) but NOT the fantastic, seamless, wide cycle path on the Kogarah Golf Club side of Marsh St that actually goes nowhere. On this side, the path suddenly stops, with no destination point. If it connected to the existing paths at Tempe Reserve (direct crossing of Marsh St and/or continuation to paths looping to international terminal) that would make more sense for cyclist usability and safety. Please rectify this asap. It's been like this for many years with no explanation to the community.
Tempe residents direct road access to international terminal: It is essential for direct road access to the international airport to continue via Marsh St during and after Sydney Gateway works.
Why can Airport Drive no longer be used to directly connect road users between the international and domestic terminals?

We are pleased to see mention for adding active travel connectivity to Sydney’s network as outlined in NSW and Local Government strategy.
However, we object to the Sydney Gateway project and propose that the project should not be approved, until it is strongly aligned with current NSW Government policies and plans, to meet its stated goal “making journeys from west and south-west Sydney to Sydney Airport, the M5, Eastern Distributor and Port Botany easier, faster and safer”, for all customers.
Summary of Issues:
1) Missing walking and cycling integration to surrounding active travel network, in particular from surrounding local areas to Sydney Airport, a major destination and employment centre for the local community.
2) Access during construction - The conditions of consent must be phrased to provide specific commitment that “active travel access routes during construction must be safe, direct, convenient and consistent in travel time and distance with the existing routes”.
Full submission attached.

The Sydney Gateway project is missing important walking and cycling integration from the surrounding area's active travel network, to Sydney Airport, a major destination and employment centre for the local community.
Please add in the missing links outlined at https://www.bikeast.org.au/bikeast/bikeast-submission-sydney-gateway-concept-design/:
- A connection from St Peters Interchange to the Alexandra Canal cycleway
- A direct, crossing of the Cooks River from the South towards the CBD
- Direct connections from the Alexandra Canal cycleway to T2, T3 and beyond, to the Bayside Council network
- A direct connection between Coward St and Sydenham station (and future Metro)
It's really critical that we incentivise walking and cycling if we're to reduce emissions and ensure a habitable future.

2. The EIS claims “The project is consistent with the [Future Transport 2056] strategy, but without providing a safe active transport connection to the airport, the current proposal is in fact in conflict with the Future Transport Statewide Outcome Measures, including “increase the number of people able to access centres by walking, cycling and using public transport”, increase “the % of the population within Greater Sydney with 30 minute or less access to their nearest strategic centre by public or active transport”, and reduce “fatalities and serious injuries across the road and transport network”.
3. The NSW Government Principle Bicycle Network (PBN) has a tier-one route between the Alexandra Canal and Wentworth Avenue, along the alignment of Airport Drive, though the PBN recognises the change of the cycleway to the northern side of the canal resulting from Sydney Gateway. The current Sydney Gateway proposal should not be approved if it fails to deliver this PBN link and potentially makes it impossible to deliver in the foreseeable future.

This cycleway is a regional cycle route that is well loved, and utilitsed bicycle route to and from the city. One of the benefits of the bicycle route is that it follows the canal and provides a safe and enjoyable journey. Open spaces, green spaces and waterways should be available for the public and local fauna to enjoy.
Removing the cycleway and creating a local route that requires circuitous detours is not an appropriate, equitable solution.
Please review the active transport routes proposed.
