Traffic and Parking
Conjestion around the current Fish Markets will be transferred to residential streets near the corner of Wentworth Park/Bridge roads.
24-hour activities & traffic now located in a commercial area will be relocated to residential streets and the high school.
Public Transport
The capacity for visitors is greatly increased in the planned building. Light rail is already over-crowded. Tourist buses regularly wait in no-standing areas and park in residential streets. Only one public bus route services the current location (501). No bus route supplies the important CBD- to-Fish Market route - don't even think about Harris street as being 'close' to the proposed new site.
As a resident of 15 years, the upgrades around Blackwattle Bay were key to my decision to move into the area: this includes the foreshore walk, from Annandale to Glebe Secondary School (and expected to continue to Woolloomooloo). The proposed new Markets are a large built structure that will remove the visual and physical continuity from Wentworth Park, out into the Bay and Anzac bridge. The concept diagrams show a multi-storied retail centre, higher than any of the (large) fig trees in the park. These plans seem to be building Broadway shopping centre (waterside version).
Size and impact on the harbour
Why build this structure in the water? It must be much more expensive than using existing land within the Bays Precinct. The usage of the bay is a combination of i.) stabling for ferries, ii.) mooring for luxury pleasurecraft iii.) training/racing location for club, state and national crews (rowing, outrigger canoes and dragon boats). The new market takes up significant space (in the water) right next to boats moving in/out of both rowing sheds, as well as taking away a significant 'safe area' for novice rowers and paddlers, next to these sheds.
Preferred Location
Either re-build the Fish Markets where they are, or build new markets on Glebe Island, where suitable public transport can include the new metro link.
Don't build in a residential location.
