For the region to grow at the rate we would like, and at a rate reported in the Hunter Region Plan 2036, not only do we need to support local jobs but we also need to be able to service the demand of a growing population with the necessary construction materials.

Martins Creek is one of the only hard rock quarries in the region delivering high quality pavement materials, drainage & service backfill materials and as a constituent in other materials.

As a project manager of the Daracon Group I have managed the construction of multiple large and small scale projects throughout the Hunter area over the past decade most of which have used these quality materials. This has played a major role in maintaining healthy employment to local people and keeping business within our region. It has also helped deliver infrastructure of the highest quality to conform to the various standards and specifications.

Quarries provide materials for growing cities, they are the sand in your concrete slabs for your house. They produce the materials for the roads to drive on, or the ballast for your train commute.

Quarries are necessary for our current society. There is no alternatives for rock or gravels. The anti coal mine argument is based on renewable alternatives, there is no alternative to quarries. Yes there are other quarries, but that is simply moving the problem to somewhere else.

Martins creek quarry has been operating for the better part of a century. Use has responded to changing material demands. Today it produces a number of products required for a wide range of civil infrastructure projects. These projects are located around the wider hunter region and provide infrastructure for our community. New roads and new buildings are all celebrated by society. Quarries are a vital part of this process.

Opposition to the quarry is primarily based on the "not in my backyard" mentality. Ultimately the government will decide if the local impacts are of greater concern than the supply of material to the greater community.

I will pose the question, if an existing established quarry with an approved EPL can not gain approval, will a new quarry be allowed to open in its place ?

Lets utilise existing quarries and already disturbed areas to supply materials. Impacts associated with haulage can easily be over come with upgraded local roads

* There are a lot of infrastructure projects in the Hunter. Limiting material supply may increase the cost of projects which the taxpayer is funding
* The construction industry relies on the Quarry as one of only a couple of hard rock suppliers in the region and if the Hunter Valley is to prosper and grow, Martins Creek Quarry will be required to provide the necessary materials for major infrastructure projects.
* The Quarry provides materials to many projects crucial to the growth and prosperity of the region: road construction, housing, railway construction and other public infrastructure.

I have worked for Daracon for the past 10 years. During this time, it has become apparent to me that the company has a very strong focus on creating jobs and subsequently wealth, for the people of the Newcastle, the Hunter Valley and beyond. Daracon has been successful in creating jobs through the absolute adherence to its company values, demonstrating respect to all members of the public, its employees and Daracons clients. The expansion of the Martins Creek Quarry will provide much needed resources to the local building and construction sector therefore strengthening the industry and providing more employment in the Region.

I believe the proposed expansion of Martins Creek quarry should be approved. There are numerous government funded projects (as well as private) forecast for the area and this quarry provides competitive rates and therefore value for taxpayer funded works. Other clear benefits for the local community are employment and job security for both direct and non-direct personnel. Additionally the quarry has been in operation for approximately 100 years, why displace local material requirements to other sources?

Martins Creek Quarry provides materials for many local projects that are being completed for the benefit of the local community.

As both a local resident and a Daracon employee, constant renewal and growth is a must moving forward, and with this growth, construction products from within this quarry are vital.
