The Hunter Regional Plan has been updated to reset its priorities for the region and extend its reach from 2036 to 2041.
The update of the plan involved extensive consultation with the community and stakeholders, including during exhibition of a draft updated plan from 6 December 2021 to 4 March 2022.
The final Hunter Regional Plan 2041 aims to ensure continued prosperity and wellbeing of the Hunter’s vibrant and connected communities.
The plan builds on our previous efforts and responds to this era of rapid change to promote sustainable growth, connections and resilience.
As a response to the new ways people live and work following the COVID-19 pandemic, the plan’s key focus is creating sustainable 15-minute mixed-use neighbourhoods where people’s everyday needs can be met close to home with a short walk, bike ride or a car trip in rural areas.
The close access to jobs and services will encourage exercise, public transport use and reduce dependency on cars.
Another key focus is ensuring the Hunter makes a sustainable transition to net zero emissions and remains the leading regional economy in NSW. We are planning for greater diversification of the land used for mining and energy generation to open new opportunities for jobs in renewables and green industries.
