The Riverina Murray Regional Plan 2041

The Riverina Murray Regional Plan has been updated to reset its priorities for the region and extend its reach from 2036 to 2041.

The review of the regional plan involved consultation with the community and stakeholders, including during exhibition of a draft updated plan from 28 July to 12 September 2022.

The final Riverina Murray Regional Plan 2041 (the regional plan) builds on the 2036 plan as a 20-year land-use strategy to support a prosperous future for the region.

The regional plan sets the framework, vision and direction for strategic land-use planning to meet future needs for housing, jobs, infrastructure, a healthy environment and connected communities.

The next 20 years will be an exciting period of change for the region, with strong growth expected and opportunities to make the Riverina Murray an even better place to live, work and visit. The plan will harness opportunities from the following catalyst projects:

  • Wagga Wagga Special Activation Precinct
  • Albury Regional Job Precinct
  • Inland Rail
  • South-West Renewable Energy Zone
  • Murray River bridges projects.

The regional plan also addresses changing housing needs, including the need to provide a diversity of housing to meet changing demographics and the needs of temporary workers and visitors.

The regional plan is underpinned by the region’s environment values. It seeks to protect and harness these values to support ongoing prosperity and growth and to build resilience against natural hazards.

The future of energy is renewable. The regional plan supports a transition to net zero emissions region by 2050 and will explore a future South West Renewable Energy Zone.

The regional plan seeks to address the influence of key investment and policy decisions in Victoria, impacting the border and broader Riverina Murray communities.

A key part of this work is helping local Aboriginal land councils achieve their aspirations for their land as outlined in the NSW Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983.
