Alternative Assessments

New technology

New technologies can be incorporated into BASIX if they are not already defined by the tool.

New technologies can be incorporated into BASIX if they are not already defined by the tool. New technologies may include geo-thermal heating and renewable energy sources not currently available in the BASIX online tool. An application must be lodged with the Department of Planning and Environment for new technologies. Applicants should contact the Department to discuss the process.

Eligibility

Before a technology can be considered for inclusion in BASIX, it must:

  1. Achieve one or both of the following:

    • a saving in residential potable water consumption that is greater than 1% (2.5kL per year) of the water end-use consumption of an average dwelling1;
    • a saving in residential greenhouse gas emissions that is greater than 1% of the energy end-use or greenhouse emissions (85 kg CO2-e per year) of an average dwelling;
  2. Have already been physically demonstrated with provable savings arising from operation over a period of at least 1 year; and
  3. Comply with the relevant Australian and NSW standards, regulations and guidelines.

The process

The Department will assess the application in relation to the potable water savings and energy/greenhouse gas savings of the proposed technology. The Department reserves the right to accept or refuse any application at its discretion.

If successful, the Department will calculate and assign savings for the technology type. This may also involve refinements to the functionality of the BASIX tool, as well as the tool's appearance.
